Designing: It’s Hard, But Don’t Give Up!
By: Raffly Aulia Ramadhan
Design is planning on making an object, system, component or structure. Designing process in ancient times still used the manual method using various tools such as rulers, pencils, drawing pens, drawing paper, and in the process of making a design it took a long time, and with a lengthy time spent also comes the frustration of having to make multiple design choices. Even for a small scale design there ought to be multiple designs that had to be scrapped but if you think to yourself “Oh, that is such a hassle”, then that would mean either you are a quitter or afraid to try new things — and of course we would not want to be that kind of person.
But the question remains, why does one need to go through a lot of well designs when designing stuff? Well, the answer is quite simple: you do not make a successful product with only one design without taking into consideration multiple factors that will affect your product as if you do only one design then your product would have a risk of it failing.
One then might ask, “Well, then what to do in this situation?”. The answer is simple enough: do not give up and keep being passionate when designing your product. If you give up, your competitors might take up your design and perfected it for themselves, or if you are not passionate then you could ended up designing a product that is not only a failure but also be seen as a lazy attempt at creating something to do a quick cash grab at whatever you are trying to do. This would risk your future product being tainted or remembered as the product of a lazy designer.
But then, what if one just keeps designing to create a perfect product? Well, that would risk the possibility of your product being too late to the market or passing the deadline or your competitor could finish designing their product first and launch it before you could. Then, what should one do? Balance. They need to balance the time needed to design the product and the time it would take for your products to be made and shipped. Again, if you do not balance it out, it could lead to your product being a failure or not being realized.
In conclusion, designing is hard, but so are studying, cooking or even playing games — and while you could just copy others’, it would be better to do it yourself as you can put what you want into the design, change the design to suit the needs or just make overall improvement. But remember, you also need to balance it as you cannot just go and make design all day and not produce anything because then the point of you designing it would be lost. So while yes, it is hard, do not give up and go make something wonderful!
